Formal French Garden

On Friday, we took a walk up to the Hillwood estate.
It's the home and gardens of Marjorie Merriweather Post (of General Foods fame).
It's absolutely incredible. She was a big collector of Russian and European Royal objects.
I really suggest to anyone that has a chance to go, goes. And be sure to take the guided tour of the mansion.

I know what you're thinking. "man, does this picture of John make him look funny"
Well, this isn't a picture of John. It's a cicada we saw while walking along the bike trail on Saturday- the bike trail that runs along route 66.
It was John's 50th birthday- and it was a nice, cool, breezy August day.
We walked out to Ballston, came back along the bike trail, and ate dinner at Lauriol Plaza.

Bar called Recessions has giant drafts of beer for $3 during happy hour.
Bit of a dive bar, but the mugs are clean and the beer is cheap.
National Cathedral

The cameraphone didn't quite get the colors correct in this one. The green grass was unreal in it's color green.
Anyway, there is a nice exhibit at the National Cathedral- it details the entire process and life of the cathedral, from the first stone being laid to the last. Really interesting. I suggest you see it.
It's a free exhibit, but they do accept donations. Like everyone else, the cathedral is falling under hard financial times... they've laid off people, ended some programs, etc.

Special Beetle

We were walking in the woods by the National Cathedral. There was this plant with these pods on it. John stepped on one of the pods and a very, milky substance came out.
Then, we noticed this beetle on one of the pods. Using a long mouth-part, it pierced the shell of the pod, presumably to drink the milky substance inside.
We often see these things on nature shows- specialized insects and plants that work in tandem together. Was cool to see it happening before our eyes.

Don't know why I like this photo so much- maybe becuase for being taken with a cameraphone it's not so bad; maybe it's the grouping of the caps. Just like it.

in Union Station there is a sushi restaurant- Kabuki Sushi.
They make the BEST Veggie Futomaki ever!
Better than any high-class, expensive place.
