Wow. How things have changed.
I went ahead and ordered a Dell laptop- even though none of my "friends" (if you can call them that) or family has offered to buy my old equipment.
The process of ordering this laptop was a nightmare. I haven't received it yet, so as far as i know the nightmare isn't over.
I applied for the Dell Credit - no payments for 18months. Placed my order online, and when i finally hit the "submit" button, i got a webpage that said there was an error. I called a Dell sales person, and she kindly offered to help me complete the order. When she tried to submit it, she said " well, it must have already gone through- becuase the amount of Dell Credit you have has been reduced by the cost of the machine"- but she couldn't explain why i didn't have an order number, or why my account did not show that an order was placed. This went on through multiple chats with tech support, sales, Dell Credit support, etc. Problem was, i was being charge, through Dell Financing, for a machine i was never going to get, becuase it was never going to be built- because there was no record of the order (however, there was no problem deducting the cost of the machine from my Dell Financing account)- nor could i cancel the order, because there was no order to cancel.
Seriously- 24hours of tech and sales support chats, and phone calls to support- no one could help.
then as, i was about to purchase a system from Alienware, i figured i'd call Dell and give them a piece of my mind. I ended up with Bill Kemp (i have his phone number if anyone wants it)-while i complained, he fixed the probelm in the background. Seriously. He put me on hold for approx. 2min- and fixed the problem that 8 or 9 other people couldn't fix in the span of 24hours. Not only that, he sold me a laptop. And, it was built and tested in 12hours!
Now, it sits in the "boxing phase"-
Thank you Bill.
